Dark CO2 Fixation in Avocado Roots, Leaves, and Fruit
نویسندگان
چکیده
In a previous study avocado roots fixed CO2 about as rapidly as orange and lemon roots but much slower than bean roots (2). However, homogenates of avocado roots or leaves did not fix CO2. This study was made to explore reasons for the failure of homogenates of avocado to show CO2 fixation, and also to understand more of the relatively low degree of CO2 fixation by avocado roots in. case it may have a bearing on the susceptibility of the species to lime-induced chlorosis (6, 10).

C-labeled Assimilates in Grapefruit: Light and Dark CO2 Fixation by Leaves and Fruit
Distribution of radiolabeled assimilates was examined at various intervals after 1 hour of light or dark 14CO2 fixation by leaves or developing fruit of grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) so that the fate of assimilates from each source could be assessed at sequential stages of fruit growth. Exported products of both light and dark 14CO2 fixation in leaves were deposited primarily in juice tiss...
متن کاملViewpoint : Why are non - photosynthetic tissues generally 13 C enriched compared with leaves in C 3 plants ? Review and synthesis of current hypotheses
Non-photosynthetic, or heterotrophic, tissues in C3 plants tend to be enriched in C compared with the leaves that supply them with photosynthate. This isotopic pattern has been observed for woody stems, roots, seeds and fruits, emerging leaves, and parasitic plants incapable of net CO2 fixation. Unlike in C3 plants, roots of herbaceous C4 plants are generally not C-enriched compared with leaves...
متن کاملComparison of Scirtothrips Perseae (thysanoptera: Thripidae) Infestation Levels on Avocado Fruit and Leaves
Avocado fruit can be severely damaged by Scirtothrips perseae (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in southern California. Scirtothrips perseae is found on leaves and fruit, but its prevalence on one versus the other substrate has not been documented. In this study, the occurrence and infestation levels of S. perseae on avocado leaves and fruit during late spring and summer were compared at three sites in...
متن کاملIntegrating transient heterogeneity of non-photochemical quenching in shade-grown heterobaric leaves of avocado (Persea americana L.): responses to CO2 concentration, stomatal occlusion, dehydration and relative humidity.
Long-lived shade leaves of avocado had extremely low rates of photosynthesis. Gas exchange measurements of photosynthesis were of limited use, so we resorted to Chl fluorescence imaging (CFI) and spot measurements to evaluate photosynthetic electron transport rates (ETRs) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Imaging revealed a remarkable transient heterogeneity of NPQ during photosynthetic in...
متن کاملEffects of Silicon Amendment on Soilborne and Fruit Diseases of Avocado
The effects of silicon (Si) amendment have been studied in several plant/pathogen interactions; however, studies in horticultural tree crops are limited. Effects of amendment with soluble potassium silicate (AgSil®32, approximately 30% available Si), or milled cement building board by-products (Mineral Mulch (MM) or Mineral Dust (MD), containing 5% available Si) were investigated in field and g...
